About Council Oak Lodge #745

A PROUD TRADITION OF BROTHERHOOD AND SERVICE

Our History

Council Oak Lodge #745 was chartered on May 18, 1966, and has been a cornerstone of the South Bend Masonic community ever since. Our Lodge takes its name from the historic Council Oak tree, a symbol of peace and unity in our community.

For nearly six decades, our Lodge has been dedicated to the principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. We have initiated, passed, and raised countless men into the Craft, each one contributing to our rich heritage and continuing our mission of service and fellowship.

The Broken Column symbolizes the untimely death of a worthy Brother. It reminds us that our work on earth may be cut short, and encourages us to live virtuously each day.

The Legend of the Council Oak

Our Lodge is named after the legendary Council Oak, a massive oak tree that stood for approximately 400 years in what is now Highland Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana. This ancient tree witnessed pivotal moments in North American history.

The Historic Council (May 1681)

Under the sprawling branches of the Council Oak, French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, held council with representatives of the Potawatomi, Miami, Illinois, and other Great Lakes tribes. The purpose was to forge alliances against Iroquois aggression and grant La Salle exploration rights along the Kankakee River. This historic meeting shaped 18th-century colonial relations and led to French territorial claims to Louisiana.

A Symbol of Unity and Endurance

The Council Oak stood as a symbol of unity, peace treaties, and cooperation between peoples. Despite surviving two lightning strikes in the 20th century, the tree endured until 1991, when violent thunderstorms with tornadic winds finally destroyed it. In 1992, the massive stump was removed and a commemorative plaque was installed in Highland Cemetery.

Council Oak Jr. and Our Lodge

In the 1960s, a new tree—Council Oak Jr.—was planted from an acorn of the original tree. When Council Oak Lodge #745 was chartered in 1966, it was during this same era of renewal. Like the young tree growing from its legendary ancestor, our lodge carries forward the values the Council Oak symbolized: unity through fellowship, cooperation in service, endurance of traditions, and community impact that creates lasting legacy.
