Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about Freemasonry, our Lodge, or how to join? Here are answers to some common questions.

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is the world's oldest and largest fraternity. It's a brotherhood of men committed to self-improvement, charity, and service to their communities. We use symbolism and allegory drawn from architecture and stonemason traditions to teach moral lessons and encourage personal growth.

How do I join?

Freemasonry requires that you ask to join—we don't recruit. If you meet the basic requirements (at least 18 years old, of good moral character, and believe in a Supreme Being), contact us to schedule an informal meeting. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions, meet some of our members, and learn more about what Freemasonry means to us. If you decide to proceed, we'll guide you through the petition process.

What happens at Lodge meetings?

Our stated meetings include a business session where we discuss Lodge affairs, vote on petitions, plan events, and handle administrative matters. We also conduct degree work, which is the ceremonial aspect of Freemasonry where candidates advance through the three degrees of Masonry. Most meetings begin with a dinner at 6:30 PM, allowing Brothers to fellowship before the meeting starts at 7:30 PM.

How much does it cost?

There is a one-time initiation fee that covers the three degrees of Masonry, and annual dues to maintain your membership. Costs vary by Lodge. Contact us for specific information about Council Oak Lodge #745's fees and dues. We never want cost to be a barrier to membership—if you're interested but concerned about finances, please talk to us.

Can I visit your Lodge?

If you're a Master Mason (or Entered Apprentice / Fellow Craft with a Master Mason in good standing who can vouch for you), you're welcome to visit our stated meetings on the first Monday of each month. Please contact us in advance so we can properly welcome you. If you're not yet a Mason but are interested in learning more, we'd be happy to arrange a tour of our building and an informal meeting with some of our members.
